Dusty Shelves Review: Forbidden Sea by Sheila A. Nielson

I have really been slacking off on this challenge. Between books for school, library books, review books, new books....yeah, those dusty books just keep getting dustier! I'm going to TRY to keep working them into my reading schedule though, I really am!

Anywho, this book I started about 2 months ago, and I just kept putting it aside because of everything else I had to get read. I finally got it done though - thanks to my self imposed "clear off that crazy 'currently reading' goodreads shelf read a thon!"

Forbidden Sea

Publisher: Scholastic
Release Date: July 1st, 2010
Number of Pages: 304
Where did I get this book: Scholastic book order
How long have I owned this book: about a year
My rating: 3.5/5

Goodreads Summary:

"A mermaid haunts Adrianne's dreams . . . is she coming to warn her, save her, or drag her down into the depths of the briny sea forever? When Adrianne comes face-to-face with the mermaid of Windwaithe Island, of whom she has heard terrible stories all her life, she is convinced the mermaid means to take her younger sister. Adrianne, fierce-willed and courageous, is determined to protect her sister from the mermaid, and her family from starvation. However, the mermaid continues to haunt Adrianne in her dreams and with her song."

Review:

This is a middle grade fantasy. And it's actually the first mermaid book I think I've ever read, interestingly.

I don't really have a lot to say about the book. I found it to be very slow for about the first 2/3 of the way through. I had a very hard time getting into it. I didn't really connect with the characters...Adrianne was the only one I really liked - but, I hated how everyone, and I mean just about everyone picked on her. It just made me uncomfortable. She lived with her mother, who just seemed like a very weak person, who couldn't even stand up for her own daughter, her little sister, and her mean, psycho aunt Minnah who has it out for her from the beginning. Adrianne is made fun of because she is not very pretty and rather tomboyish. I just felt bad for her, I guess. Then when she starts seeing mermaids, that doesn't really help her case any.

It didn't seem like any action really happened until the very end. I did like how it ended though. I just wish that the undersea world would have been expanded upon throughout the book.

If you like fairy tale type stories, you will probably like this one!

This completes 2 books in my Dusty Bookshelf challenge for 2012.
